LA Care Community Clinic HIE Access Project

On July 1, 2010 WHIN was awarded a grant from LA Care Health Plan to further its mission as a community health plan serving vulnerable and underserved populations of Los Angeles County.  Specifically, this grant looks to address the issues related to improving public health and reduce health disparities by addressing issues such as access to coverage and care, by connecting a minimum of ten LA County community clinics with over 30 sites to the existing WHIN Health Information Exchange (HIE) network.  These clinics will have access to network data providers’ patient data, including admission, diagnosis, treatment, medication, physician notes, demographic information, and Quest Diagnostic laboratory results.  The grant duration is from July 1, 2010 through June 30th, 2011.  The project is now completed.

Benefits of Health Information Exchange:

Health Information Exchange (HIE) improves quality of care by providing “just in time” access to clinical data and patient information to providers at the point of care.

Other benefits include:

  • Improvement in patient safety
  • Enhanced patient-physician dialogue through greater access to clinical data
  • Reduced medical errors
  • Reduced duplicate testing
  • Reduced costs
  • Decreased risk of medication and treatment errors
  • Support of chronic diseases management and timely detection of communicable disease outbreak

Cost to Join?

There is no cost for community clinics to participate in this program. L.A. Care provided the initial funding to cover the cost of this project. Sometime in the distant future, there may be a fee to participate and you will be given the choice to continue (or not) at that time. L.A. Care and WHIN are working together to find ways to subsidize the cost of.
